Erin Young, Project Geologist
Erin's interest in water resources stems from her upbringing where she
explored the snowy terrain, frozen lakes, and navigable waters of Minnesota. She moved to Arizona
in 1995, wide eyed and surprised to see such spectacular terrain. It was through
an enthusiastic professor of Geology at Arizona State University,
Stephen Reynolds, that Erin realized studying the earth as a profession provided many amazing
opportunities. Erin served two summer internships while an undergraduate, one in
1998 through the University of Minnesota Department of Geology, where
she spent part of the summer at the UMN and the other part in northern
Sweden assisting a PhD student with a structural geology project, and
the other in 1999, working with a team of scientists studying earthquake
recurrence in Kyrgyzstan. Erin earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Geology in 2000
and immediately hired on with a groundwater consulting firm, HydroSystems,
Inc in Tempe. The cooler climate of the north eventually won
her over, and she moved to Flagstaff, interested in the
hydrogeology of the Colorado Plateau. She worked as a
Research Assistant in the Geology department with Dr. Abe
Springer at Northern Arizona University from 2003 to 2006.
Her thesis involved use of the USDA Simultaneous Heat and
Water (SHAW) model to predict maximum frost depth for
different soil types at Camp Navajo just west of Flagstaff.
Erin joined Fluid Solutions in 2005 while finishing her
Masters degree. She has worked as a field representative,
learning much about drilling, designing, and testing water
wells, using surface geophysical methods in assessing the
groundwater supply, and has experience in groundwater
modeling.
In her spare time Erin likes to keep her nose in local
hydrology business and is active with the Flagstaff Chapter of the Arizona
Hydrological Society. You would likely find her at Arizona Snowbowl or
